Seems like a huge waste of resources to me.

But isn't it kind of cool? All they do is but a mold around the young fruit and it fills it out and make the shape. I think footlong eggs are worse myself.
Also, in France I think they make some liqour by hanging bottles in trees with a tiny pear inside each, and then the pear grows inside the bottle. They harvest bottles and pears, and then add wine or something and store it and... voila! You have something good!
Ah, "Poire Prisonniere". I've seen pears in both cognac and calvados-bottles, never tasted it though.
"A pear in jail"? What a perfect name!!!
