I have never heard of him, but this is really interesting! What a tragic end though: "died in a fire in a windmill in Holland in 1977 at the age of 31".
The last series of stamps in the linked article are really nice, the ones with the seagull and the iceberg.
The seagull, ship, and iceberg reminds me of "The Endurance", the ship expedition to the South Pole that got stuck in the ice. I can't remember the name of the leader/explorer, Rasmussen? I think he was American, not Norwegian...
Shackleton, born in Ireland. The "Endurance"-expedition had the ambition to be the first to cross Antarctica, but never reached land before being crushed by the ice. There
are several good books written about how they managed to save themselves and get help. Recommended reading.
