Stamp of the Day: Then and Now

Then: Phone booth.  Now: iPhone

Then: Printed maps. Now: GPS.

Then: Ice boxes.  Now: Refrigerators

Then: Black and white TVs.  Now: Flat-screen TV.

Then: LPs and record players.  Now: iPods.

The technological development during the last 50 years is featured on these Australian stamps.  I can write a million words on this, about its pros and cons, but that will have to wait.  In the meantime, I'd like to point out that phones used to function without having to have batteries or being plugged into an electrical outlet, maps work when the power is out, and I don't think anybody would like an icebox in their regular kitchen.

OK the icebox...
Maybe I don't want one in my kitchen...but what an amazing large industry ice used to be. Harvesting, it, storing it, transporting it...

If you could choose would you get rid of all that too?
Amazing to think of it now, but the Milwaukee Railroad ran "icers"(ice refrigerated refrig cars into the 1970's.

Ice is a pretty good form of energy conservation, and there are other ways to chill food too.

Did you know that in one of the estates in our ancestory, they had a "chill house" with a creek from a cold well running through och the floor. Here they stored the soured milk, cream and milk for days, despite hot summer weather. I bet they chilled beer and svagdricka too!
