Stamp of the Day: Vattenvägar ('Water Ways')
A Swedish stamp from 2001 on the rivers of northern Sweden illustrates all the water that has fallen and now is on its way to the oceans again. On the map above, the mountains are on the left side, and the Baltic Sea are on the right side. Vattenvägar, literally 'water roads', are the term used for old traveling routes on water in Sweden, and includes lakes, rivers, streams, brooks, and canals. A lot of timber was moved along these rivers in Sweden, from the inland forests to the saw mills along the coast of the Gulf of Botnia in the Baltic.
